Non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma and epilepsy are more and more common in Malawi.

NCDs are the second leading cause of death in adults after HIV/AIDS in Malawi. They account for 16% of all deaths with 17% of deaths in males and 14% in females attributed to them.

Malawi has very high levels of hypertension at 32.9% in adults, which is much higher than many countries in the region. Timely treatment is very important to prevent the development of severe complications such as strokes and chronic wounds.

A very important part of these clinics is health education and increasing awareness – such as the importance of a healthy diet, physical exercise and the risks of smoking and use of excessive alcohol.

We have currently about 3000 patients registered in our NCD clinic as of 2024. The clinic is supported by community volunteers, appropriate treatment guidelines which are also available as a smartphone app, a well managed and stocked pharmacy, and dedicated nurses and clinicians.
