HIV / AIDS

The impact of HIV/AIDS in Malawi is huge, and especially so in Mulanje. Out of the total adult Malawian population above 15 years of age, 8.9% is infected with HIV.

The prevalence in the south eastern zone, where Mulanje lies, is higher among women (14.0%) than men (9.0%) and generally higher than in most other parts of Malawi (source: Malawi Population Based HIV Impact Assessment, 2021).

The 95-95-95 targets for HIV diagnosis and prevention have recently been achieved in Malawi, and work to stop viral hepatitis B and syphilis is undertaken. More work remains to stop new HIV infections from happening.

ART clinic

The anti-retroviral clinic is a busy department. The figures below show the total number of people on anti-retroviral therapy (ART) through MMH.

Year Number of clients on ART
2021-22  6608
2022-23  6547
2023-24 6454

Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis remains a problem too. Case detection has improved in recent years through:

  • establishment of community sputum collection commitees throughout the region
  • screening of all sick HIV patients who are admitted to the hospital for evidence of TB
  • preventive therapy for TB for patients newly started on HIV-treatment
  • high quality digital X-ray at the hospital
  • annual screening of healthcare workers at MMH
  • maintaining a clinic at Mulanje Prison
Directly observed therapy is provided through the TB office, and homevisits are undertaken in case of treatment interruptions.
