Seventy farmers in the village of Luwanje have started using a new irrigation site in their area. The new scheme covers seven hectares and has a solar-pumped borehole. Water is now available throughout the year for horticulture and other crops. The scheme has a very large watertank, so that a further 4 hectares could be added in future.
The Sustainable Livelihoods team have equipped farmers in the area of soil conservation and business training and will continue to mentor them, to make the most of the (significant) potential for income generation. The scheme is located close to a major vegetable market in Mulanje, but also production of end products such as sauces is planned in the village.
Thank you to Fane Valley from Northern Ireland for the fantastic support, and to the contractor Francis for delivering a great piece of work.
