The past days Mulanje Mission Hospital has performed the first cataract operations in our new Eye Department. We are very happy and grateful that 19 patients could be treated!
Cataract is a common and blinding condition of the eyelens, treated through lens extraction and implantation of a new lens. Malawi has among the highest rates of blindness due to cataract in the world, with more than 5,000 cases in Mulanje alone – something MMH is determined to change.
The current operations were done together with an experienced team of nurses and clinicians from Zomba Central Hospital. MMH nurses trained at Zomba first, and continued learning this week. Our Eye team outperformed all expectations – they were described as fast learning, well-equipped and ready to continue on their own!
From now on we aim at continuing to provide Eye care with regular cataract surgery sessions. Thank you to all who made this new step possible – it is the culmination of the hard work of many partners and friends.
